Difference between SP 2010 and SP 2013 trunks - can 2013 run on 2010 trunk

We have a case where we are transitioning an existing SP2010 trunk to SP2013 application.  It has been suggested to try and configure the SP2013 application on a trunk that was created using the SP2010 option. 

Is that possible?
