Windows 8 client group policies won't update after DirectAccess gpos deleted

I set up DirectAccess in server 2012 but had to uninstall it. I didn't remove my windows 8 ent client from the direct access client security group so when the GPOs were removed, it still was configured for DirectAccess via the gpo. Now when I do a gpupdate /force it gives me the following error:

The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to
a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would
be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group
Policy has successfully processed. If you do not see a success message for seve
ral hours, then contact your administrator.

I also still see the DirectAccess VPN connection when I look at the network settings on the windows 8 client.

Any suggestions how I can get my computer to stop trying to connect to Direct Access and successfully update policies?
